Citizen CPR Foundation: Saving Lives and Transforming Communities

In a world where emergencies can strike at any moment, organizations like the Citizen CPR Foundation (CCPRF) play a vital role in equipping individuals and communities with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively. CCPRF's mission to save lives from sudden cardiac arrest through community, professional, and citizen action is more than just a statement; it's a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of collaboration, education, and innovation. In this blog, we'll delve into the history, core values, and impactful programs of CCPRF, highlighting their mission to make the world a safer place.

A Foundation Built on Core Values

CCPRF's mission is guided by three core values:

  1. CPR and AED Saves Lives: The foundation firmly believes in the life-saving potential of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). These interventions can mean the difference between life and death during sudden cardiac arrest.
  2. Collaboration is Key: CCPRF recognizes that the battle against sudden cardiac arrest cannot be won in isolation. Collaboration among citizens, professionals, communities, and organizations is the linchpin of success. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, CCPRF strengthens the chain of survival.
  3. Action Based on Best Practices: CCPRF is committed to using evidence-based best practices in science, education, and implementation. Their actions are rooted in the latest research and knowledge to ensure the best possible outcomes for sudden cardiac arrest victims.

A Rich History of Lifesaving Efforts

Founded in 1987, CCPRF has dedicated over three decades to strengthening the Chain of Survival, a series of actions designed to increase the chances of survival for sudden cardiac arrest victims. Their journey began with a focus on educating lay rescuers and has expanded to encompass interventions by emergency medical services (EMS), paramedics, healthcare providers, and specialists in intensive care units.

One of CCPRF's most significant contributions to resuscitation education is the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Update (ECCU) Conference. For years, ECCU served as a gathering place for resuscitation professionals, providing a platform for learning, networking, and discussing the latest trends in CPR. As ECCU evolves into the Cardiac Arrest Survival Summit (CASSummit), it continues to be a hub of resuscitation excellence.

HEARTSafe Communities: A Blueprint for Preparedness

CCPRF's HEARTSafe Community program sets clear criteria and guidelines to improve outcomes in sudden cardiac arrest emergencies. This program focuses on the "chain of survival" and encourages communities to put these protocols into action. HEARTSafe Communities engage in activities such as widespread CPR instruction, public access defibrillators, and resuscitation protocols for first responders and hospitals.

With over 600 local HEARTSafe communities and growing, CCPRF's program has made significant strides in enhancing community preparedness. By meeting the criteria and committing to citizen health and safety, these communities proudly display their dedication with official recognition and signage.

40 Under 40: Honoring Tomorrow's Lifesavers

The future of sudden cardiac arrest survival lies in the hands of young innovators, leaders, and those ready to take action. CCPRF's "40 Under 40" recognition program celebrates 40 outstanding individuals under 40 years of age who have made meaningful contributions to sudden cardiac arrest outcomes. This diverse group includes everyday citizens, educators, community activists, scientists, responders, and more.

Nominees for this prestigious award can come from various backgrounds and are evaluated based on their impact in areas such as saving lives, community preparedness, awareness campaigns, scientific contributions, innovations, and clinical practice improvements.

Lifesaving Strategies: Education as a Catalyst

CCPRF understands that educating people about CPR and its benefits is pivotal in increasing sudden cardiac arrest survival rates. They offer a range of programs and resources to transform knowledge into action:

  1. Learn CPR: CCPRF provides resources on hands-only CPR and AED usage, ensuring that individuals are prepared to save lives when the need arises.
  2. CPR in Schools: Teaching CPR in schools is a potent way to reach large groups of people and equip students with life-saving skills. Advocating for legislation to expand in-school CPR training is also a priority.
  3. Community Training: CCPRF's community training programs focus on educating as many people as possible in CPR. They provide information and resources to help communities establish their own training programs.
  4. Mobile CPR and PAD Programs: These initiatives bring CPR training and defibrillators directly to the people who need them, increasing access to life-saving equipment.
  5. CPR Around the World: CCPRF encourages the global spread of CPR training to create safer communities worldwide.
  6. Dispatch CPR and In-Hospital Resuscitation: CCPRF recognizes the critical role played by dispatch-assisted CPR. Their programs aim to improve the effectiveness of CPR instructions provided by 911 responders, increasing the chances of bystander CPR and survival. They also focus on refining in-hospital resuscitation responses to enhance resuscitation metrics.

Cardiac Arrest Survival Summit 2023: Challenging the Status Quo

CASSummit 2023

The Cardiac Arrest Survival Summit (CASSummit) serves as a central hub for resuscitation professionals, educators, advocates, and decision-makers in the field. With a theme of "Challenging the Status Quo: Respond. Revive. SURVIVE," CASSummit provides a platform for experts, innovators, and peers to discuss the latest trends, science, strategies, and solutions related to resuscitation and sudden cardiac arrest.

WorldPoint is proud to be a Diamond Sponsor of the event this year. Attendees can anticipate an array of engaging activities, including the CPR Saves Lives Rally, designed to underscore the life-saving potential of CPR. Beyond that, CASSummit offers a rich tapestry of networking opportunities, providing a platform for professionals to connect, collaborate, and share insights. Educational presentations led by experts and innovators will delve into the latest trends, science, and strategies, empowering attendees to challenge the status quo and contribute to the mission of responding, reviving, and ensuring survival in sudden cardiac arrest cases. Don't miss out on this transformative event; register today while rates are low, and be a part of the resuscitation revolution.

Hans H. Dahll Award: Honoring Contributions

The Hans H. Dahll Award, named after a founding director of CCPRF, recognizes leaders who have made substantial contributions to CPR, ECC, research, and clinical practice. This prestigious award has been presented at ECCU conferences since 1990 to individuals who have had a significant impact on resuscitation science and practice.

William H. Montgomery, MD, Excellence in Education Award

This award is designed to promote educational excellence at the Cardiac Arrest Survival Summit. Named in honor of Dr. William H. Montgomery, a co-founder and longtime president of CCPRF, it celebrates individuals who have excelled in educating others about cardiac arrest response and survival.

Cardiac Arrest Survival Video Contest

CCPRF collaborates with the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation to host a Cardiac Arrest Survival Video Contest as part of CASSummit. This contest encourages the creation of videos that raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest, heart attack recognition, citizen CPR, and AEDs. The winning video receives an AED in recognition of their efforts.
