The Importance of AED Training at the Workplace

There are 10,000 cardiac arrests in the workplace each year in the United States and only 50% of people can locate an automated external defibrillator (AED) at work, according to the American Heart Association. Knowing where an AED is located and being trained in the proper use has the potential to save thousands of lives. Do you know where an AED is at your workplace? Are you trained to use it?

WorldPoint is here to help you get trained in the lifesaving skills of CPR and AED use by providing the highest quality CPR and AED training supplies. Read more about AEDs, AED training, and why your workplace should be equipped to act in an emergency.

What is cardiac arrest?

Cardiac Arrest is the abrupt loss of heart function. Cardiac arrest can be fatal if the appropriate care isn’t given immediately.

With cardiac arrest, an electrical malfunction in the heart causes an irregular heartbeat (also known as an arrythmia) that disrupts the pumping action of the heart; when this occurs, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs, and other vital organs. Cardiac arrest onset occurs suddenly, and seconds later, a person becomes unresponsive, is not breathing, or is only gasping. Death can occur in minutes if the victim does not receive treatment.

With cardiac arrest, fast action can save lives.  Immediate CPR can double or TRIPLE the chance of survival. Here are 3 simple steps to remember:

  1. Call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number.
  1. Start CPR.
  1. If an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible.

What are AEDs?

An AED – short for Automated External Defibrillator – is a portable electronic device that is used to restart the heart of a victim who is suffering from cardiac arrest. When properly attached, the AED automatically analyzes the heart rhythm and when appropriate, delivers an electrical shock to the heart to restore its normal rhythm.

You can find AEDs in many public places, including airports, malls, and local recreation facilities. Many offices also have AEDs, but they might be located somewhere hidden, or an area that you are not familiar with.

How do you get trained in AED use?

Although using an AED is easy, it is best to be taught by a certified instructor. The American Heart Association offers CPR/AED training for community members (also referred to as lay-responders), called Heartsaver® CPR AED. You can also choose to take the Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED course, which teaches additional lifesaving first aid skills. Click here to find an American Heart Association CPR course near you.

What do you use in AED training?

For AED training, training materials including CPR manikins, AED trainers, and CPR pocket masks are used to replicate cardiac arrest scenarios and train students in providing high quality CPR, rescue breaths (ventilation), and properly use an AED. Your instructor will also use teaching materials, such as American Heart Association Student Workbooks, and Course Videos.

CPR manikins are replicas or dummies of a cardiac arrest victim and they are available in adult, child, and infant. They often have devices within them to show the CPR giver if they are providing proper CPR. These devices are called CPR feedback devices and are required to give feedback on compression depth and compression rate, per the American Heart Association CPR guidelines. CPR manikins also allow placement of AED training pads on them for realistic training and simulation of a proper response to a cardiac arrest scenario. CPR manikins also allow you to provide ventilation via CPR pocket masks.

CPR pocket masks are a device used to safely deliver rescue breaths to a victim of sudden cardiac arrest. To use a CPR pocket mask, you first make sure that a one-way valve (or training valve for training) is properly attached to the mask. After ensuring the airway is open, you cover the mouth and nose of a victim with the mask, creating a seal and provide rescue breaths via the CPR mask. The CPR mask provides protection to both the rescuer and the victim. For CPR and AED training, more cost-effective training versions of CPR masks and one-way valves are available to avoid cross-contamination and protect the student.

AED trainers are devices that mimic the functionality of a live AED, but do not deliver a shock. AED trainers come with a set of training pads that replicate real AED pads. To use an AED trainer, you turn it on and follow the vocal instructions – or ‘prompts’ – that will tell you what to do, when to place the pads on the CPR manikin, and where to place the pads on the CPR manikin.
