National Preparedness Month: Prepare to Protect

Are you prepared for a disaster to strike at any time? Is your family? Unfortunately, for many of us, the answer is no. September is National Preparedness Month, so now is the perfect time to get prepared!

Each year, the goal of National Preparedness Month is to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and disasters that could happen at any time. Proper preparation is KEY in these life-or-death situations. This year’s theme, “Prepare to Protect,” encompasses how preparing for disasters and emergency situations is protecting the ones around you and the ones you love.

Although unfortunately there are many disaster and emergency situations for which we can prepare for, it’s important to take the time to do so. You never know when an accident or emergency will happen – why not be prepared?! This year’s National Preparedness Month has 4 weekly themes. Read more to walk through the weekly themes and get some tips for how you can help yourself and those around you Prepare to Protect.

Week 1: Make A Plan

Make sure you and your family make a plan for disasters that may occur in your area. This may include – but is not limited to – fires, hurricanes, or earthquakes. It is important to plan for how you will communicate with your loved ones before, during, and after the emergency situation.

Week 2: Build A Kit

Building a kit is crucial. Be sure to build a kit for your family and loved ones – including pets – so that you have what you need for several days. Along with non-perishable food and drinking water, your kit should also include basic first aid and bleeding control items. Since you never know where you will be when an emergency occurs, prepare a kit for home, work, and for your car.

Important Emergency/Disaster Kit Items:

  • Water (1 gallon per person per day for several days)
  • Food (a 3-day supply of non-perishable food) and pet food
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio
  • Flashlights and new batteries
  • First Aid Kits
  • Bleeding Control Items like tourniquets, gauze, and sterile dressing
  • Whistle
  • Plastic sheeting and duct tape
  • Manual can opener
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with chargers and a back-up battery
  • COVID-19 Supplies - masks, soap, hand-sanitizer, disinfecting wipes
  • Prescription medications
  • Non-prescription medications (pain relievers, antacids)
  • Prescription glasses and/or contact lens case and solution
  • Warm blankets or sleeping bags
  • Important family documents in a waterproof, portable container (or saved electronically)
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Changes of clothing
  • Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
  • Books, games, or puzzles

WorldPoint carries a variety of First Aid Kits in different sizes, so it is easy to find the perfect fit for each location.

Week 3: Low-Cost, No-Cost Preparedness

Preparedness – in a sense – is knowledge. Learn about the disasters that are most common in your area, know the risk, and see if there is anything that you can do ahead of time to lower the risk. For example, if your area experiences strong storms – see if there are any home improvements you can make to make your home stronger and less likely to get damaged. Similarly, you should check your insurance coverage to make sure it is up to date!

Other Low-Cost, No-Cost Preparedness actions you can take include learning life-saving skills of CPR, AED use, first aid, and bleeding control. You can take a course, like the American Heart Association Heartsaver or Pediatric Heartsaver course, or purchase supplies to teach yourself and your family! Click here to find an American Heart Association course near you and click here to find a bleeding control course near you. A great teaching tool for families is the 2015 American Heart Association (AHA)/ Laerdal® CPR Anytime® Kit. These kits are available in adult/child and infant and contain everything you need to learn the lifesaving skills of CPR and choking relief – and it only takes about 20 minutes per age group!

Week 4: Teach Youth About Preparedness

This is NOT a time to keep children out of the conversation – include your children in your plans! Make sure to discuss the preparations with them, and what they should do in case they get separated from you. You can also teach your kids CPR, first aid, and other lifesaving skills – it is never too early to learn! Have your kids get involved – have them help to shop for food and supplies and put together the kit.
